Nancy glanced up at the sun, studying its position in the sky. They had already been gone for most of the morning and it was already well into the afternoon. The fact that they still hadn’t arrived at the women’s clinic that Sarah had told her about made her nervous about making the return trip back before dark.

Nancy’s fear had nothing to do with the darkness, but more of how much time Susan and Kurt’s baby had left. Everything that they read in the medical books suggested that the child’s sepsis needed to be treated immediately.

“Are you sure you know where you’re going?” Nancy asked.

Sarah had walked ahead a few paces, but Nancy had noticed that she was starting to look around, almost like she realized she was lost.

“We should be close,” Sarah answered.

Nancy jogged to catch up with Sarah until they were side by side. “Have you been to this place before? Like, you’re not making it up, right?”

Sarah wrinkled her nose, annoyed. “Why would I make it up?”

Nancy shrugged. “Sometimes when people are under duress, they make up things to help them cope. I know that’s what I did after my parents died. I was convinced that—" Nancy stopped herself, realizing that she was about to talk about the prisoner back at camp.

Sarah noticed that Nancy had stopped herself mid-sentence and raised an eyebrow. “Care to finish?”

Nancy shook her head and quickly changed subjects. “I just know what it’s like to keep pressing forward even after you think you’ve gone too far just to save face. If you’re lost, it’s okay to say it.”

Sarah rolled her eyes. “I’m not five years old, you know. I know that it’s okay to admit when you’re wrong. Besides.” She adjusted the shoulder straps of her pack. “I really do think we’re getting close.”

Nancy glanced around. She noticed less damage from the fires this far north. The greenery from the forest on the sides of the road was growing more frequent.

“I guess it’s a good sign that the fire didn’t reach this far,” Nancy said.

“Yeah, I think we might’ve gotten lucky-” Sarah froze.

Nancy placed her hand on the grip of the pistol, her senses heightened. “What’s wrong?”

Sarah pointed up to the left on the side of the road. “That’s the sign for the women’s clinic. We’re close.” She lowered her hand and elbowed Nancy in the arm. “See? Told you I knew where I was going.”

“Yeah, well, even a broken clock is right twice a day,” Nancy said.

Nearing the clinic, both girls remained silent and more alert. They crouched low near some trees to the left of the clinic where they could see the front door.

“How much longer do you want to wait?” Nancy asked.

Sarah was quiet for a moment before shaking her head. “Something doesn’t feel right.”

Nancy frowned. “Don’t tell me you’re getting cold feet?”

“I would have at least thought that a few people would have known about this place,” Sarah answered. “And if that were the case, I would’ve thought
